Conquering Iceland With a Pencil

Do you learn better from diagrams than words? Do you like to colour-code your notes? Do you doodle on your notes to remember them? If the answer to these is yes, chances are you prefer to learn things visually. Popular psychology likes to divide students into visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learners, suggesting that they should be taught according to the style of whichever box they get placed in.

The bad news is that scientists treat this with as much skepticism as the theory that everyone is either right-brained or left-brained. They haven't found any evidence that students recall information significantly better when it's presented to them in their learning style. Whether they recall it better when the question is presented in a particular style is open for debate. Students do however express preferences for how they want to be taught, and this can be very useful for engaging and motivating them to learn.

11+ Winter Courses

Hampstead Village Tutors will be hosting two further 11+ courses over the Winter Holidays.

The first will take place at Burgh House, New End Square, NW3 from Wednesday 17th to Friday 19th December. It will run from 9am until 1pm each day.

The second will take place at the Camden Arts Centre, Arkwright Road, NW3 from Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th of January. It will run from 10am until 2pm each day.

Due to tricky school dates and bank holidays, you will note each course is three mornings long, as opposed to the usual four. We have therefore extended each morning to four hours, so that all the material can still be covered. Rest assured we will give the students regular breaks and biscuits!

Both the December and the January courses will cover the same topics, so attending both is not recommended. However, all the material will be different to that covered in the Summer and Autumn Courses - although naturally we will be building on the same skills.

HVT’s recent 11+ courses have been tremendously successful, with the pupils who attended last year gaining places at St. Paul’s, City, North London Collegiate, South Hampstead, Habs, Francis Holland, Channing and Queen's College amongst others.

The course is suitable for all students sitting 11+ entrance exams this academic year, and also for boys who are preparing for any further 13+ pre-tests that will take place in Year 6.

Sessions will cover English and Maths, and will also incorporate coaching in exam technique and interview skills, which will help your child to shine during their forthcoming assessments.

As part of the course, each child will have the opportunity to sit a timed paper in both English and Maths, and will be given detailed written feedback to take away.

Our focus will not only be on consolidating knowledge and exam technique, but also on encouraging the pupils and building confidence before they face their first crucial set of exams.

The cost of the course is £240 + VAT.

"At last, an agency that listens to what is required rather than sifting through their books... the attention to detail and service has been truly excellent, and the four tutors we've employed have all been perfect for the job and actually delightful people too."
